Last week, we discussed Psalm 1:1-3, considering the importance of being able to judge between right and wrong, and how doing so leads to a prosperous life. This week, I want to zero in on the second part of verse 1: nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk (AMPC).
This blessed man has made a quality decision, from which he will not retreat, to stand for the things of God. He is like Daniel and his companions who purposed in their hearts to not sin against God. He sees and wisely rejects the path that sinners choose: one of destruction, compromise, disregard for Biblical values; one that leaves God out the equation, that is wide with no real hope or fulfillment; one that is governed by a “que será, será” attitude, and one that considers God to be dead. Before the temptation comes, the blessed has already purposed not to submit to anything that does not line up with God. Thus, when tempted to evil, such as lying or dishonoring God in any way, he is able to boldly resist in accordance with the Word of God (Proverbs 8:7 and Proverbs 11:1 CEVDCI).
Now, let’s consider more of verse 1: nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.
The blessed man not only takes a stand, but also, he will not sit down among the scornful. The word scornful denotes open dislike or disrespect. Ultimately, the scornful dislike or disrespect God, and they have absolutely no esteem for His Word. So there is no way the blessed man can be cozy with the scornful. In fact, because of his affinity for the Word of God, the blessed man will eventually find himself the object of the scorner’s disdain. The blessed man knows he cannot be comfortable or relax with someone who outright comes against God and His Word.
As believers, sinners should not be comfortable around us to the point of no conviction. Our lives should speak clearly to them about God. I am not talking about being self-righteous or filling our mouths so full of Christianese that no one can relate to us. I am talking about being light in this world. When God brought darkness to Egypt for Pharaoh’s refusal to release Israel from bondage, the Israelites enjoyed light while the Egyptians were plagued with immense darkness: They (Egyptians) did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings (Exodus 10:23 NKJV). In this day and age, there has to be a difference between believers and unbelievers. We should not be looking, acting, and thinking like the world. For example, when unbelievers come into our presence, they should be aware that our worldview differs drastically from theirs, there is no room for negotiation, and we will not change! The Bible is our guide and compass, and it contains our instructions for life. The blessed man is blessed because he is dedicated to God. He strives to see God magnified, God’s will fulfilled, and God’s heart manifested. The blessed man is the man who has Shalom—nothing missing and nothing broken in any area of his life.
