Focus

I start this blog with an important question. What have you been focusing on as America goes through this COVID-19 pandemic? I know you may be tired by now of hearing about COVID-19. Frankly, I am as too, but please hear me out. It is vitally important, as God has been reminding me, to remind others to stay focused on Him, and not on COVID-19. I want to share with you some Biblical words to help you stay focused.

In 2 Chronicles 20:12, King Jehoshaphat had armies coming to battle him, which caused him great alarm. He gathered his people, called a fast, and prayed for an answer. I want you to notice right now particularly verse 12.

Oh our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.

For the purpose of this blog, I draw your attention to the phrase but our eyes are upon You. Who are your eyes focused on during this time? Are they focused on or COVID-19 or God? Are they focused on death or the life-giving Jesus Christ? Are they focused on lack or God your supplier (Philip 4:19). Are they focused on fear or on faith in God to protect you (Psalms 91)? Who or what has your attention as you face the almost daily changes in the ending dates of shelter-in-place mandates? Who has your ear? Have you been listening to news updates and casualty numbers from COVID-19 more than you have been hearing and reading God’s Word? Have you set aside time, as Jehoshaphat did, to seek God and ask him what should you be doing right now while at home? Again, where is your focus?

Psalm 121, enumerated verse-by-verse below, is another passage of scripture we can use during these trying times:

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? 2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. 8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore

Davidadmonishes us to keep our eyes and focus on Father God. We should see Father God as the One who will keep us through any kind of trouble. Father God is your help, not the government. Father God is your supplier when stores run out. If you trust Him and keep your eyes steadfast on Him, Father God will make sure no COVID-19 touches your body or your house. Oh! Can you feel faith rising in your heart today, helping you put your focus back where it should be: on Father God only.

In our story above, Jehoshaphat turned his focus on God instead of the armies coming against him, or the fear of being destroyed,or the cries of people around him, or the the suggestions of close advisors. In essence, he focused ONLY on hearing from God concerning the situation. When he did that, he received an assurance of victory from Father God.

Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. (2 Chronicles 20: 14-15).

Did you hear that last statement? This battle against this pandemic is not yours; it is the Lord’s. And I have news for you today: it has already been won by Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago when he died and rose again saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth (Matt 28:18). And He gave that authority to us so use it.

Paul confirms that when he says, At the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philip 2:10,11).

Jesus is Lord over COVID-19; you do not have to fear it one bit. Jesus is whom you should keep your eyes on. Jesus has you all the way. He is the Rock you stand on and declare that you will not fear COVID-19 or anything else. Go forth today, keeping your eyes focused on Him only, and you will never fall or be without. God bless you, and may you continue to hear His voice.
